Description
The Vortex, also known as the Bowl, is a hike outside Gunlock, Utah that is sure to delight most, if not all. After a short and scenic drive out of Saint George, you will be hiking on varied colored sandstone.
First, descend amidst dark colored lava rock. Continue your journey a short distance through sand and rock in the washy bottom, with little lizards scurrying around and lots of neat little creature tracks in the sand.
You will then start your ascent on the sandstone that I think looks like reptile skin. Be sure to turn and look behind you as you ascend and a cindercone will be perfectly framed among the rocky elevations. Once you reach the saddle area, enjoy the panoramic view of the mountainous region of the Red Mountain Wilderness. As you face the overlook, you have two options. Towards your left you can explore the garden of cairns. Toward the right and upward is the Vortex.
Once you climb upward, you will see a mini vortex starting to form. Continue onward and you can’t miss the Vortex. If you are sure footed, you can carefully descend into the bowl and find your name that some previous vandals may have carved into the sandstone. Our kids like to have their snack or lunch in the vortex. All around the vortex are great views and an excellent spot to soak in the sun and fresh air. Enjoy your time and recharge and relax at this beautiful spot!
