Padre Canyon via Tuacahn Trail
Description
Have you ever done a hike where you see a camel at the beginning of the trail? The Padre Canyon via Tuacahn Trail will let you check that off your list.
The trailhead begins on the northeast side of the Tuacahn Amphitheater parking lot, watch for the sign. Descend immediately into the small wash, then head towards your left. You will wind behind the outdoor theater section. It is fun to see some of the pieces of sets and some of the resident animals. My favorite is the camel. How often do you get to see a camel? Please don’t go onto the theater’s property or go up to the animals though.
The trail then enters into the canyon, meandering through massive sandstone boulders. This trail is just over the ridge from Snow Canyon State Park. You will get to enjoy the same orange sandstone formations and impressive cliff walls as you hike upward. The trail does get steep on the last section and you will receive your daily dose of cardiovascular exercise. Be sure to take some peeks behind you as you climb upward, you will have a stunning view of the canyon behind you and off into the distance of Ivins and Santa Clara.
The “end” of the trail is the saddle. Find the trail register in the ammo box and sign your name and see where others are from that have conquered the trail. You can continue downward into Snow Canyon State Park, or turn around and head back the way you came, which is what we typically do.
