Little Finland
Description
Don’t tell Utah I said this, but Gold Butte National Monument and the Little Finland area in Nevada are right up there with Utah-worthy geology and exploration opportunities. This could be my new favorite place. Sorry Utah, I still love you.
We traveled into Gold Butte in October. We were treated to gorgeous weather for hiking and cool and comfortable temperatures for camping. Best of all, we only saw two total people on this particular walkabout.
Little Finland is named for the fins, otherworldly formations of red rock in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Some are jagged, some are rounded, others have windows or small arches in them, others tower high above you. There are a few short slots to walk into and we were even able to scramble up one to emerge above Little Finland. We loved the ability to wander all over to look at whatever we so desired, being able to appreciate the rock shapes, textures, alcoves, and meander to whatever drew our attention.
The camping options were great as well. The stars were brilliant and the Milky Way was bold across the night sky. We even had wild burros right next to our campsite one night. Though they are considered non-native and potentially damaging, I have to admit it was comical to be awakened by the angry braying of the feral burro.

Difficulty: As difficult as you want it to be, it can range from mild to challenging depending on what you are walking or climbing.
Trail Stats: 5.4 miles though this is if you complete the loop presented by All Trails. You can walk around amidst the rock formations for whatever mileage and time you would like. The elevation gain will vary quite a bit depending on how much meandering you do.
Trail Finding: There really isn’t a trail, you will explore to your heart’s content.
Conditions: Rock, some optional scrambling.
Would I Repeat This: Already planning on it!
Let’s Do This
Parking: Yes. Of note, the roads in this region are extremely rough, pot hole ridden, and a washboard/sharp cobblestone texture. At times there are short, sandy stretches. I would not bring a car back here.
Timing: Caution with the time of year since this desert area is remote and without much shade.
Downloaded Map: Yes, highly recommended.
Fees: None
