Gunlock Falls
Description
Gunlock Falls is a seasonal, short hike near Gunlock, Utah. Watching the numerous falls plunge over the cliffs and the water tumble down the rocks is a sight to see. The thunderous sound of the crashing water rumbles through your body and reminds you how powerful of a force water is. The contrast of the water on the red and orange rocks is stunning. We have seen the falls at their most powerful, which is amazing. We have also seen the falls when they are less pronounced. This was also really fun because we were able to more easily navigate over and amongst the network of streams to see some waterfalls that we could not get to when the water was running high. If the falls are running, any time is worth going to see them.

Difficulty: Mild difficulty, though the actual hike itself is short.
Trail Stats: The set trail until you can first see the falls is 1.2 miles, out and back, 167 feet elevation gain. Once you get to the point of seeing the falls, it is a free for all if you are walking on the rocks where the water is flowing. This part requires more balance and potential agility.
Trail Finding: Easy to navigate to the falls. Once you are at the falls, there is not a trail and you are able to walk around the rocks and amid the falls and streams.
Conditions: Loose gravel for the initial descent from the parking lot. Ascending up to the falls will require good traction on your shoes to help with the sand covered rocks. In addition, the rocks around the falls can be very slippery when wet, so please take caution.
Would I Repeat This: Yes, and we have many times.
Let’s Do This
Parking: There is a parking area just off of the highway.
Timing: Anytime. Our favorite time has been in the evening for the lighting, and less crowds. The falls are active in the spring, though may not flow every year. If they are flowing, it may not be daily. Gunlock State Park Facebook page will typically have a post to update if the falls are flowing or not that day.
Downloaded Map: Not necessary. The trail and access area is well traveled.
Fees: Gunlock Falls is within Gunlock State Park. You will be required to pay the daily entrance fee, or to present your State Park Pass.
